The Huon Class Minehunter Coastal Program

In August 1994, ADI was awarded a AUD$1 billion contract to design and build six world leading Huon Class Coastal Minehunters and provide associated support products and infrastructure for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

The ships are based on the proven Italian GAETA Class, derivatives of which are in service with five other navies including the United States Navy. ADI established a state-of-the-art facility on a greenfield site in Newcastle, New South Wales. The success of this program has been recognised by the Department of Defence.

All minehunters have been delivered on time and to budget with performance exceeding customer expectations. The ability of ADI's system engineering and integration capabilities were recognised with the winning of a National Engineering Excellence Award from the Institution of Engineers Australia.

Capabilities

Using the catalyst of the successful minehunter program, ADI has established a proven and highly capable team for the execution of complex prime contracts. This capability spans:

• Project management
• Naval engineering
• Naval production

ADI is focusing on securing further contracts which preserve and further build on this core capability for both Defence and commercial clients.

Support Services

ADI's performance was recognised by the RAN with the award in 2000 of a five year contract to provide a comprehensive support service to the operational Huon Class Minehunters. This support service is the most encompassing contract of its kind to be established for the support of RAN assets. It includes the provision of:

• Maintenance
• Spares
• Inventory management
• Systems engineering support
• Crew training

Due to the recognised success of the contract and the commitment of ADI, this model is becoming the blue print for the future contracting of RAN support services.
