Joint Task Force Headquarters (Afloat)

ADI was awarded a contract to perform the design for the integration of seven C4I systems that comprise the Joint Task Force Headquarters (JTFHQ) (Afloat). The design contract (JP8001, Phase 3A, Stage 1) was awarded to ADI in September 2000 and was completed within three months. The resultant design was submitted as a Royal Australian Navy (RAN) TSM 187 Configuration Change Proposal.

Tailored to suit Australian conditions and needs, the deployable headquarters provides broadband communications between the deployed headquarters and the mainland ADF headquarters. Central to this capability is the Joint Command Support System (JCSS) that has been developed and installed by ADI in all Australian Defence Force (ADF) headquarters.

The JTFHQ (Afloat) capability will allow a joint task force commander to direct operations from the ship using the latest command, control, communications, computer and intelligence (C4I) systems previously available only in the various land based headquarters.

ADI installed the system in HMAS MANOORA between January and May 2001 in time for the Tandem Thrust exercise. Much of the installation activities were performed either at sea or at remote locations in Australia. The installation activity involved the coordination of nine different DMO projects and 17 subcontractors. This was achieved through the use of the Prince 2 integrated project team approach.

Following the handover of the JTFHQ (Afloat) system in HMAS MANOORA to the RAN in June 2001, ADI has been commissioned to install an identical capability on the sister ship HMAS KANIMBLA. This system is planned to be completed in April 2002.
