About ADI

ADI is Australia's leading defence, engineering and systems contractor.

The company provides a broad spectrum of technologies, products, services and systems, both in the defence and commercial sectors.

The ownership of ADI by major Australian engineering and infrastructure company, Transfield Holdings and leading international defence and electronics company Thales, in a 50:50 joint venture, has enhanced our ability to target global opportunities. In addition to our own capabilities, we now have clear access to a wider variety of state-of-the-art technologies and management skills.

With sales of over AUD$700 million and around 2,500 people, ADI is able to apply its expertise, size and resources to deliver large and complex programs.

We are able to draw on our strengths as a successful prime contractor and systems integrator to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions.

We have proven prime contracting, systems integration skills and through life support capabilities. We tailor our expertise to achieve the optimum solution for each of our customers.

Excellent examples of this are our internationally recognised state-of-the-art minehunter ships, built for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). In developing a world leading minehunter, ADI integrated technologies from Australia, Europe and the United States of America.

These skills, including management, cost schedule control and quality systems, have since been used on the RAN's guided missile frigate upgrade.

ADI has enjoyed particular success both in Australia and internationally with systems based on its core command support system, its military vehicles and mine countermeasures.

The joint task force command system developed and installed by ADI links Australian Defence Force headquarters to every major land, air and maritime headquarters in Australia. The Five Power Defence Arrangement's air defence system at Butterworth, Malaysia, and the Royal Thai Supreme Command's command support system were also developed and installed by ADI.

ADI has supplied the Royal Australian Navy with its first joint task force headquarters afloat which provides all the capabilities of a shore headquarters and we are the Navy's major supplier of communication systems. We operate the Navy's ship repair, maintenance and modernisation facility at Sydney's Garden Island which is also used by a variety of commercial vessels.

ADI's High Mobility Engineering Vehicle (HMEV) is in service with the Australian Army and has been purchased by the US Army. ADI is producing the Bushmaster infantry mobility vehicle for the Australian Defence Force. ADI's Australian Minesweeping System (AMAS) is used by Australia, UK, Denmark, Poland, US Navy's 5th fleet, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Japan and Indonesia.

Under a long term Australian Defence Force contract, ADI manufactures rifle ammunition, grenades, aircraft bombs, Phalanx anti missile shells, large calibre ammunition, demolition charges and training and practice products. We also produce propellants, explosives and chemicals and are currently sole worldwide supplier of Kongsberg's Penguin missile warheads used by Australian and overseas navies.

ADI's aerospace business has grown rapidly, aiming to become a world class, regional leader. It has been substantially boosted by our role as a major Australian partner in the Eurocopter team which is supplying the Australian Army with its Aussie Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters, through its subsidiary Australian Aerospace. ADI's responsibilities include the key task of customising the mission system including the software of the Eurocopter Tiger for Australian operating conditions.

Outsourcing is another expanding activity. The company has a 10 year, AUD$230 million contract to warehouse, maintain and distribute the Australian Defence Force's explosive ordnance.

The Optronics assembly and repair capability established in 1991 at ADI's facility on Garden Island, Sydney Harbour, will shortly undertake work on helmets and displays for the Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter (ARH) project. The TopOwl helmet and the multi-function displays for the ARH are to be assembled and tested at ADI's Optronics facility. The facility also continues to support in service Tasman thermal imagers for the Australian Army. As a prime contractor, ADI has made its first deliveries of driver's night viewers for the Army's Leopard tanks under a A$4M contract.

Many of the skills ADI has developed for the defence market are just as relevant to the commercial market.

Ferry construction and refurbishment projects are a direct result of our success in building minehunter ships and refitting naval vessels. We have adapted information systems developed from defence applications to win key State governments contracts and our specialist vehicles for the security and fire industry are based on the core design of our infantry mobility vehicle.

Our business is driven by a commitment to affordable superiority, a concept that comes from our proven ability to deliver superior performance and capability within realistic budget constraints.

ADI is one of Australia's leaders in research and development with strong affiliations with the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and leading tertiary institutions.

It is a commitment to innovation and quality, our strong network of global connections and our determination to deliver affordable superiority, that drive today's ADI.
